واذ قلنا للملئكة اسجدوا(1)  لءادم فسجدوا(2)  الا ابليس ابى واستكبر وكان من الكفرين

Recall that we said, "Enter this town, where you will find as many provisions as you like. Just enter the gate humbly, and treat the people nicely. We will then forgive your sins, and increase the reward for the pious."

واذ قلنا ادخلوا هذه القرية فكلوا منها حيث شئتم رغدا وادخلوا الباب سجدا(3)  وقولوا حطة نغفر لكم خطيكم وسنزيد المحسنين

Who are more evil than those who boycott GOD's masjids, where His name is commemorated, and contribute to their desertion? These ought not to enter therein except fearfully. They will suffer in this life humiliation, and will suffer in the Hereafter a terrible retribution.

ومن اظلم ممن منع مسجد(4)  الله (1) ان يذكر فيها اسمه وسعى فى خرابها اولئك ما كان لهم ان يدخلوها الا خائفين لهم فى الدنيا خزى ولهم فى الءاخرة عذاب عظيم

We have seen you turning your face about the sky (searching for the right direction). We now assign a Qiblah that is pleasing to you. Henceforth, you shall turn your face towards the Sacred Masjid. Wherever you may be, all of you shall turn your faces towards it. Those who received the previous scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. GOD is never unaware of anything they do.

قد نرى تقلب وجهك فى السماء فلنولينك قبلة ترضىها فول وجهك شطر المسجد(5)  الحرام وحيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره وان الذين اوتوا الكتب ليعلمون انه الحق من ربهم وما الله(2)  بغفل عما يعملون

Wherever you go, you shall turn your face (during Salat) towards the Sacred Masjid. This is the truth from your Lord. GOD is never unaware of anything you all do.

ومن حيث خرجت فول وجهك شطر المسجد(6)  الحرام وانه للحق من ربك وما الله(3)  بغفل عما تعملون

Wherever you go, you shall turn your face (during Salat) towards the Sacred Masjid; wherever you might be, you shall turn your faces (during Salat) towards it. Thus, the people will have no argument against you, except the transgressors among them. Do not fear them, and fear Me instead. I will then perfect My blessings upon you, that you may be guided.

ومن حيث خرجت فول وجهك شطر المسجد(7)  الحرام وحيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره لئلا يكون للناس عليكم حجة الا الذين ظلموا منهم فلا تخشوهم واخشونى ولاتم نعمتى عليكم ولعلكم تهتدون

Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until sunset. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD's laws; you shall not transgress them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.

احل لكم ليلة الصيام الرفث الى نسائكم هن لباس لكم وانتم لباس لهن علم الله (4) انكم كنتم تختانون انفسكم فتاب عليكم وعفا عنكم فالن بشروهن وابتغوا ما كتب الله(5)  لكم وكلوا واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الابيض من الخيط الاسود من الفجر ثم اتموا الصيام الى اليل ولا تبشروهن وانتم عكفون فى المسجد(8)  تلك حدود الله(6)  فلا تقربوها كذلك يبين الله(7)  ءايته للناس لعلهم يتقون

You may kill those who wage war against you, and you may evict them whence they evicted you. Oppression is worse than murder. Do not fight them at the Sacred Masjid, unless they attack you therein. If they attack you, you may kill them. This is the just retribution for those disbelievers.

واقتلوهم حيث ثقفتموهم واخرجوهم من حيث اخرجوكم والفتنة اشد من القتل ولا تقتلوهم عند المسجد(9)  الحرام حتى يقتلوكم فيه فان قتلوكم فاقتلوهم كذلك جزاء الكفرين

You shall observe the complete rites of Hajj and `Umrah for GOD. If you are prevented, you shall send an offering, and do not resume cutting your hair until your offering has reached its destination. If you are ill, or suffering a head injury (and you must cut your hair), you shall expiate by fasting, or giving to charity, or some other form of worship. During the normal Hajj, if you break the state of Ihraam (sanctity) between `Umrah and Hajj, you shall expiate by offering an animal sacrifice. If you cannot afford it, you shall fast three days during Hajj and seven when you return home - this completes ten - provided you do not live at the Sacred Masjid. You shall observe GOD, and know that GOD is strict in enforcing retribution.*

واتموا الحج والعمرة لله(8)  فان احصرتم فما استيسر من الهدى ولا تحلقوا رءوسكم حتى يبلغ الهدى محله فمن كان منكم مريضا او به اذى من راسه ففدية من صيام او صدقة او نسك فاذا امنتم فمن تمتع بالعمرة الى الحج فما استيسر من الهدى فمن لم يجد فصيام ثلثة ايام فى الحج وسبعة اذا رجعتم تلك عشرة كاملة ذلك لمن لم يكن اهله حاضرى المسجد(10)  الحرام واتقوا الله(9)  واعلموا ان الله(10)  شديد العقاب

They ask you about the Sacred Months and fighting therein: say, "Fighting therein is a sacrilege. However, repelling from the path of GOD and disbelieving in Him and in the sanctity of the Sacred Masjid, and evicting its people, are greater sacrileges in the sight of GOD. Oppression is worse than murder." They will always fight you to revert you from your religion, if they can. Those among you who revert from their religion, and die as disbelievers, have nullified their works in this life and the Hereafter. These are the dwellers of Hell, wherein they abide forever.

يسلونك عن الشهر الحرام قتال فيه قل قتال فيه كبير وصد عن سبيل الله(11)  وكفر به والمسجد(11)  الحرام واخراج اهله منه اكبر عند الله(12)  والفتنة اكبر من القتل ولا يزالون يقتلونكم حتى يردوكم عن دينكم ان استطعوا ومن يرتدد منكم عن دينه فيمت وهو كافر فاولئك حبطت اعملهم فى الدنيا والءاخرة واولئك اصحب النار هم فيها خلدون

يمريم اقنتى لربك واسجدى(12)  واركعى مع الركعين

They are not all the same; among the followers of the scripture, there are those who are righteous. They recite GOD's revelations through the night, and they fall prostrate.

ليسوا سواء من اهل الكتب امة قائمة يتلون ءايت الله(13)  ءاناء اليل وهم يسجدون(13)

When you are with them, and lead the Contact Prayer (Salat) for them, let some of you stand guard; let them hold their weapons, and let them stand behind you as you prostrate. Then, let the other group that has not prayed take their turn praying with you, while the others stand guard and hold their weapons. Those who disbelieved wish to see you neglect your weapons and your equipment, in order to attack you once and for all. You commit no error, if you are hampered by rain or injury, by putting down your weapons, so long as you remain alert. GOD has prepared for the disbelievers a shameful retribution.

واذا كنت فيهم فاقمت لهم الصلوة فلتقم طائفة منهم معك ولياخذوا اسلحتهم فاذا سجدوا (14) فليكونوا من ورائكم ولتات طائفة اخرى لم يصلوا فليصلوا معك ولياخذوا حذرهم واسلحتهم ود الذين كفروا لو تغفلون عن اسلحتكم وامتعتكم فيميلون عليكم ميلة وحدة ولا جناح عليكم ان كان بكم اذى من مطر او كنتم مرضى ان تضعوا اسلحتكم وخذوا حذركم ان الله(14)  اعد للكفرين عذابا مهينا

And we raised Mount Sinai above them, as we took their covenant. And we said to them, "Enter the gate humbly." And we said to them, "Do not desecrate the Sabbath." Indeed, we took from them a solemn covenant.

ورفعنا فوقهم الطور بميثقهم وقلنا لهم ادخلوا الباب سجدا(15)  وقلنا لهم لا تعدوا فى السبت واخذنا منهم ميثقا غليظا

O you who believe, do not violate the rites instituted by GOD, nor the Sacred Months, nor the animals to be offered, nor the garlands marking them, nor the people who head for the Sacred Shrine (Ka`bah) seeking blessings from their Lord and approval. Once you complete the pilgrimage, you may hunt. Do not be provoked into aggression by your hatred of people who once prevented you from going to the Sacred Masjid. You shall cooperate in matters of righteousness and piety; do not cooperate in matters that are sinful and evil. You shall observe GOD. GOD is strict in enforcing retribution.

يايها الذين ءامنوا لا تحلوا شعئر الله(15)  ولا الشهر الحرام ولا الهدى ولا القلئد ولا ءامين البيت الحرام يبتغون فضلا من ربهم ورضونا واذا حللتم فاصطادوا ولا يجرمنكم شنان قوم ان صدوكم عن المسجد(16)  الحرام ان تعتدوا وتعاونوا على البر والتقوى ولا تعاونوا على الاثم والعدون واتقوا الله(16)  ان الله(17)  شديد العقاب

We created you, then we shaped you, then we said to the angels, "Fall prostrate before Adam." They fell prostrate, except Iblees (Satan); he was not with the prostrators.

ولقد خلقنكم ثم صورنكم ثم قلنا للملئكة اسجدوا(17)  لءادم فسجدوا(18)  الا ابليس لم يكن من السجدين (19)

He said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I ordered you?" He said, "I am better than he; You created me from fire, and created him from mud."

قال ما منعك الا تسجد(20)  اذ امرتك قال انا خير منه خلقتنى من نار وخلقته من طين

Say, "My Lord advocates justice, and to stand devoted to Him alone at every place of worship. You shall devote your worship absolutely to Him alone. Just as He initiated you, you will ultimately go back to Him."

قل امر ربى بالقسط واقيموا وجوهكم عند كل مسجد(21)  وادعوه مخلصين له الدين كما بداكم تعودون

O children of Adam, you shall be clean and dress nicely when you go to the masjid. And eat and drink moderately; Surely, He does not love the gluttons.

يبنى ءادم خذوا زينتكم عند كل مسجد(22)  وكلوا واشربوا ولا تسرفوا انه لا يحب المسرفين

Recall that they were told, "Go into this town to live, and eat therefrom as you please, treat the people amicably, and enter the gate humbly. We will then forgive your transgressions. We will multiply the reward for the righteous."

واذ قيل لهم اسكنوا هذه القرية وكلوا منها حيث شئتم وقولوا حطة وادخلوا الباب سجدا(24)  نغفر لكم خطيتكم سنزيد المحسنين

Those at your Lord are never too proud to worship Him; they glorify Him and fall prostrate before Him.

ان الذين عند ربك لا يستكبرون عن عبادته ويسبحونه وله يسجدون(25)

Have they not deserved GOD's retribution, by repelling others from the Sacred Masjid, even though they are not the custodians thereof? The true custodians thereof are the righteous, but most of them do not know.

وما لهم الا يعذبهم الله(18)  وهم يصدون عن المسجد(26)  الحرام وما كانوا اولياءه ان اولياوه الا المتقون ولكن اكثرهم لا يعلمون

How can the idol worshipers demand any pledge from GOD and from His messenger? Exempted are those who have signed a peace treaty with you at the Sacred Masjid. If they honor and uphold such a treaty, you shall uphold it as well. GOD loves the righteous.

كيف يكون للمشركين عهد عند الله(19)  وعند رسوله الا الذين عهدتم عند المسجد(27)  الحرام فما استقموا لكم فاستقيموا لهم ان الله(20)  يحب المتقين

The idol worshipers are not to frequent the masjids of GOD, while confessing their disbelief. These have nullified their works, and they will abide forever in Hell.

ما كان للمشركين ان يعمروا مسجد(28)  الله(21)  شهدين على انفسهم بالكفر اولئك حبطت اعملهم وفى النار هم خلدون

The only people to frequent GOD's masjids are those who believe in GOD and the Last Day, and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and do not fear except GOD. These will surely be among the guided ones.

انما يعمر مسجد(29)  الله(22)  من ءامن بالله(23)  واليوم الءاخر واقام الصلوة وءاتى الزكوة ولم يخش الا الله(24)  فعسى اولئك ان يكونوا من المهتدين

Have you considered the watering of the pilgrims and caring for the Sacred Masjid a substitute for believing in GOD and the Last Day, and striving in the cause of GOD? They are not equal in the sight of GOD. GOD does not guide the wicked people.

اجعلتم سقاية الحاج وعمارة المسجد(30)  الحرام كمن ءامن بالله(25)  واليوم الءاخر وجهد فى سبيل الله(26)  لا يستون عند الله(27)  والله(28)  لا يهدى القوم الظلمين

O you who believe, the idol worshipers are polluted; they shall not be permitted to approach the Sacred Masjid after this year. If you fear loss of income, GOD will shower you with His provisions, in accordance with His will. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

يايها الذين ءامنوا انما المشركون نجس فلا يقربوا المسجد(31)  الحرام بعد عامهم هذا وان خفتم عيلة فسوف يغنيكم الله(29)  من فضله ان شاء ان الله(30)  عليم حكيم

There are those who abuse the masjid by practicing idol worship, dividing the believers, and providing comfort to those who oppose GOD and His messenger. They solemnly swear: "Our intentions are honorable!" GOD bears witness that they are liars.*

والذين اتخذوا مسجدا(32)  ضرارا وكفرا وتفريقا بين المومنين وارصادا لمن حارب الله(31)  ورسوله من قبل وليحلفن ان اردنا الا الحسنى والله(32)  يشهد انهم لكذبون

You shall never pray in such a masjid. A masjid that is established on the basis of righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your praying therein. In it, there are people who love to be purified. GOD loves those who purify themselves.

لا تقم فيه ابدا لمسجد(33)  اسس على التقوى من اول يوم احق ان تقوم فيه فيه رجال يحبون ان يتطهروا والله(33)  يحب المطهرين

They are the repenters, the worshipers, the praisers, the meditators, the bowing and prostrating, the advocators of righteousness and forbidders of evil, and the keepers of GOD's laws. Give good news to such believers. You Shall Disown God's Enemies Abraham Disowned His Father

التئبون العبدون الحمدون السئحون الركعون السجدون(34)  الءامرون بالمعروف والناهون عن المنكر والحفظون لحدود الله(34)  وبشر المومنين

Recall that Joseph said to his father, "O my father, I saw eleven planets, and the sun, and the moon; I saw them prostrating before me."

اذ قال يوسف لابيه يابت انى رايت احد عشر كوكبا والشمس والقمر رايتهم لى سجدين(35)

He raised his parents upon the throne. They fell prostrate before him. He said, "O my father, this is the fulfillment of my old dream. My Lord has made it come true. He has blessed me, delivered me from the prison, and brought you from the desert, after the devil had driven a wedge between me and my brothers. My Lord is Most Kind towards whomever He wills. He is the Knower, the Most Wise."

ورفع ابويه على العرش وخروا له سجدا(36)  وقال يابت هذا تاويل رءيى من قبل قد جعلها ربى حقا وقد احسن بى اذ اخرجنى من السجن وجاء بكم من البدو من بعد ان نزغ الشيطن بينى وبين اخوتى ان ربى لطيف لما يشاء انه هو العليم الحكيم

To GOD prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the mornings and the evenings.

ولله(35)  يسجد(37)  من فى السموت والارض طوعا وكرها وظللهم بالغدو والءاصال

اولم يروا الى ما خلق الله(36)  من شىء يتفيوا ظلله عن اليمين والشمائل سجدا(44)  لله(37)  وهم دخرون

To GOD prostrates everything in the heavens and everything on earth - every creature - and so do the angels; without the least arrogance.

ولله(38)  يسجد(45)  ما فى السموت وما فى الارض من دابة والملئكة وهم لا يستكبرون

Most glorified is the One who summoned His servant (Muhammad) during the night, from the Sacred Masjid (of Mecca) to the farthest place of prostration, whose surroundings we have blessed, in order to show him some of our signs. He is the Hearer, the Seer.

سبحن الذى اسرى بعبده ليلا من المسجد(46)  الحرام الى المسجد(47)  الاقصا الذى بركنا حوله لنريه من ءايتنا انه هو السميع البصير

"If you work righteousness, you work righteousness for your own good, but if you commit evil you do so to your own detriment. Thus, when the second time comes to pass, they will defeat you and enter the masjid, just as they did the first time. They will wipe out all the gains you had accomplished."

ان احسنتم احسنتم لانفسكم وان اساتم فلها فاذا جاء وعد الءاخرة ليسوا وجوهكم وليدخلوا المسجد(48)  كما دخلوه اول مرة وليتبروا ما علوا تتبيرا

When we said to the angels, "Fall prostrate before Adam," they fell prostrate, except Satan. He said, "Shall I prostrate to one You created from mud?"

واذ قلنا للملئكة اسجدوا(49)  لءادم فسجدوا(50)  الا ابليس قال ءاسجد(51)  لمن خلقت طينا

Proclaim, "Believe in it, or do not believe in it." Those who possess knowledge from the previous scriptures, when it is recited to them, they fall down to their chins, prostrating.

قل ءامنوا به او لا تومنوا ان الذين اوتوا العلم من قبله اذا يتلى عليهم يخرون للاذقان سجدا(52)

We caused them to be discovered, to let everyone know that GOD's promise is true, and to remove all doubt concerning the end of the world. The people then disputed among themselves regarding them. Some said, "Let us build a building around them." Their Lord is the best knower about them. Those who prevailed said, "We will build a place of worship around them."*

وكذلك اعثرنا عليهم ليعلموا ان وعد الله(39)  حق وان الساعة لا ريب فيها اذ يتنزعون بينهم امرهم فقالوا ابنوا عليهم بنينا ربهم اعلم بهم قال الذين غلبوا على امرهم لنتخذن عليهم مسجدا(53)

We said to the angels, "Fall prostrate before Adam." They fell prostrate, except Satan. He became a jinn, for he disobeyed the order of his Lord. Will you choose him and his descendants as lords instead of Me, even though they are your enemies? What a miserable substitute!

واذ قلنا للملئكة اسجدوا(54)  لءادم فسجدوا(55)  الا ابليس كان من الجن ففسق عن امر ربه افتتخذونه وذريته اولياء من دونى وهم لكم عدو بئس للظلمين بدلا

These are some of the prophets whom GOD blessed. They were chosen from among the descendants of Adam, and the descendants of those whom we carried with Noah, and the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and from among those whom we guided and selected. When the revelations of the Most Gracious are recited to them, they fall prostrate, weeping.

اولئك الذين انعم الله(40)  عليهم من النبين من ذرية ءادم وممن حملنا مع نوح ومن ذرية ابرهيم واسرءيل وممن هدينا واجتبينا اذا تتلى عليهم ءايت الرحمن خروا سجدا(56)  وبكيا

The magicians fell prostrate, saying, "We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."

فالقى السحرة سجدا(57)  قالوا ءامنا برب هرون وموسى

Do you not realize that to GOD prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the moun- tains, and the trees, and the animals, and many people? Many others among the people are committed to doom. Whomever GOD shames, none will honor him. Everything is in accordance with GOD's will.

الم تر ان الله(41)  يسجد(60)  له من فى السموت ومن فى الارض والشمس والقمر والنجوم والجبال والشجر والدواب وكثير من الناس وكثير حق عليه العذاب ومن يهن الله(42)  فما له من مكرم ان الله(43)  يفعل ما يشاء

Surely, those who disbelieve and repulse others from the path of GOD, and from the Sacred Masjid that we designated for all the people- be they natives or visitors- and seek to pollute it and corrupt it, we will afflict them with painful retribution.

ان الذين كفروا ويصدون عن سبيل الله(44)  والمسجد(61)  الحرام الذى جعلنه للناس سواء العكف فيه والباد ومن يرد فيه بالحاد بظلم نذقه من عذاب اليم

They were evicted from their homes unjustly, for no reason other than saying, "Our Lord is GOD." If it were not for GOD's supporting of some people against others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and masjids-where the name of GOD is commemorated frequently- would have been destroyed. Absolutely, GOD supports those who support Him. GOD is Powerful, Almighty. (22+40 = 62)

الذين اخرجوا من ديرهم بغير حق الا ان يقولوا ربنا الله(45)  ولولا دفع الله(46)  الناس بعضهم ببعض لهدمت صومع وبيع وصلوت ومسجد(62)  يذكر فيها اسم الله(47)  كثيرا ولينصرن الله(48)  من ينصره ان الله(49)  لقوى عزيز

وجدتها وقومها يسجدون(69)  للشمس من دون الله(50)  وزين لهم الشيطن اعملهم فصدهم عن السبيل فهم لا يهتدون

They should have been prostrating before GOD, the One who manifests all the mysteries in the heavens and the earth, and the One who knows everything you conceal and everything you declare.

الا يسجدوا(70)  لله(51)  الذى يخرج الخبء فى السموت والارض ويعلم ما تخفون وما تعلنون

The only people who truly believe in our revelations are those who fall prostrate upon hearing them. They glorify and praise their Lord, without any arrogance.

انما يومن بايتنا الذين اذا ذكروا بها خروا سجدا(71)  وسبحوا بحمد ربهم وهم لا يستكبرون

Among His proofs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate before the sun, nor the moon; you shall fall prostrate before the GOD who created them, if you truly worship Him alone.

ومن ءايته اليل والنهار والشمس والقمر لا تسجدوا(75)  للشمس ولا للقمر واسجدوا(76)  لله(52)  الذى خلقهن ان كنتم اياه تعبدون

It is they who disbelieved and barred you from the Sacred Masjid, and even prevented your offerings from reaching their destination. There were believing men and women (within the enemy camp) whom you did not know, and you were about to hurt them, unknowingly. GOD thus admits into His mercy whomever He wills. If they persist, He will requite those among them who disbelieve with a painful retribution.

هم الذين كفروا وصدوكم عن المسجد(77)  الحرام والهدى معكوفا ان يبلغ محله ولولا رجال مومنون ونساء مومنت لم تعلموهم ان تطوهم فتصيبكم منهم معرة بغير علم ليدخل الله(53)  فى رحمته من يشاء لو تزيلوا لعذبنا الذين كفروا منهم عذابا اليما

GOD has fulfilled His messenger's truthful vision: "You will enter the Sacred Masjid, GOD willing, perfectly secure, and you will cut your hair or shorten it (as you fulfill the pilgrimage rituals) there. You will not have any fear. Since He knew what you did not know, He has coupled this with an immediate victory."

لقد صدق الله(54)  رسوله الرءيا بالحق لتدخلن المسجد(78)  الحرام ان شاء الله(55)  ءامنين محلقين رءوسكم ومقصرين لا تخافون فعلم ما لم تعلموا فجعل من دون ذلك فتحا قريبا

Muhammad - the messenger of GOD - and those with him are harsh and stern against the disbelievers, but kind and compassionate amongst themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, as they seek GOD's blessings and approval. Their marks are on their faces, because of prostrating. This is the same example as in the Torah. Their example in the Gospel is like plants that grow taller and stronger, and please the farmers. He thus enrages the disbelievers. GOD promises those among them who believe, and lead a righteous life, forgiveness and a great recompense.

محمد رسول الله(56)  والذين معه اشداء على الكفار رحماء بينهم ترىهم ركعا سجدا(79)  يبتغون فضلا من الله(57)  ورضونا سيماهم فى وجوههم من اثر السجود ذلك مثلهم فى التورىة ومثلهم فى الانجيل كزرع اخرج شطه فازره فاستغلظ فاستوى على سوقه يعجب الزراع ليغيظ بهم الكفار وعد الله(58)  الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت منهم مغفرة واجرا عظيما
